Is being a kid still a bad thing anymore? Maybe, maybe not, either way Philadelphia duo Chiddy Bang have manipulated their weed-smoking, campus-style perception of hip hop + pop into a juvenile but original debut titled Breakfast. Just like it’s cereal infected artwork, the studio take apprehends a bubbly persona, one that constantly converses with PG-13 swag rap like B.o.B. cut down to the Disney Channel or Mac Miller’s early dayz. Mentioning Bobby Ray though, Chidera “Chiddy” Anamege has a very similar flow that’s hypnotizing over Noah Beresin’s Ratatat/Jamie xx-goes-James Murphy production on indie hop anthems (“Handclaps & Guitars”, “Breakfast”), retrospective slow jams (“Does She Love Me”) and electro works (“Out 2 Space”), but it only works when the subject matter makes sense. Breakfast tends to go stale after too many servings of illogical topics even though the notes to Kanye and little audio scribbles of love show Chiddy Bang’s charisma isn’t a one-off fling. Fresh to death is a term that needs a meaningful end, but the duo incite a lot of life into its overblown carcass.
