Going Live: Hot Water Music, The Menzingers

HOT WATER MUSIC, THE MENZINGERS
DANFORTH MUSIC HALL, TORONTO / JANUARY 29TH

Over the past 20 years, HOT WATER MUSIC have pushed melodic punk rock to its limits, convincing it to be an out no matter the rut you’re in, and the band’s recent stop was a chance to revel in Jameson-soaked nostalgia. The night seemingly traded stage banter for grizzled chords and bridged together the older crowd that sported HWM ink with the younger folk that poured their hearts out for THE MENZINGERS and LA DISPUTE. Sure, the styles oddly faded into each other but when each act kicked jaws open with familiar numbers (“Gates”, “King Park” and “Trusty Chords”), they made the wholesome sound of alternative a little more accessible, and a little more special.
