Thanks to their no-shows, unexpected break-up (and reunion), and compelling re-enactment of “Hot N Cold”, it’s hard to take DEATH GRIPS seriously. It’s also hard to walk into one of their sold-out shows with any expectations. The Sacramento outfit took the stage at Toronto’s Danforth Music Hall last Friday (July 3rd) and ultimately let loose as the Death Grips everyone’s come to love. Zach Hill (drums) and Andy Morin (keys) were both technical and menacing in their own space and MC Ride’s indecipherable, IDGAF presence was amplified thanks to brooding red lights, flying limbs, and a wave of noise that pummeled through everything. It was hard to comprehend what was what, but Ex Military, Government Plates, The Money Store, and The Powers That B shared the spotlight on fair terms – proving you don’t have to be a “sign merch, kiss babies” type to leave someone out of breath.
Photographer Josh Mahoney braved the chaos so check out his stills above – Death Grips are still on tour with dates at FYF Fest and TBD Fest
