The seventh edition of New York’s GOVERNORS BALL took over Randall’s Island Park on Friday (June 2nd) and firmly solidified its place as the ultimate three-day weekender. It’s quite the statement to make as it has recently been victimized by shaky forecasts and ill-natured competition, but the festival upped its panache by sticking to its core values and its ability to DIY waves of early summer goodness. As Day One showed, there was a significant boost in audio and visuals, fireworks, corn dogs, and community art, and in a “No Scrubs” kind of way, Gov Ball over-delivered on its promise of killer performances.
Artists such as Chance The Rapper, Beach House, Majid Jordan, Schoolboy Q, and Charli XCX never missed a beat and neither did Lorde as her 7 p.m. set tapped into Melodrama, Robyn covers, and a cloud nine, soul-stealing debut of “Perfect Places”. In short, Governors Ball aimed high and set the bar for Fridays. Now it’s just a matter of others trying to reset it. Check out our full photo recap below via photographer Matt Jumper.
