Chester French - Love The Future

Chester French / Love The Future / Interscope Records

star-rating-4

Lately, there have been numerous souls wondering, who the hell is Chester French? The answer: the greatest band of 2009 (so far) you’ve never heard of. Part Motown-esque crooning (D.A. Wallach) and part new age rhythm beats (Maxwell Drummey), Chester French is a fresh musical wonder that bleeds originality and nostalgia. Love The Future may seem like your ordinary record with a single like “She Loves Everybody”, but the other ten tracks will leave you comparing the duo to bands that once existed in a time you didn’t. It’s hard to determine the lifespan of a band that’s adored by icons such as Kanye West and Pharrell Williams, but one thing’s for sure is Chester French will leave you tapping your foot and shamelessly singing in public until their next album comes out.

Asher Roth - Asleep In The Bread Aisle

Asher Roth / Asleep In The Bread Aisle / Universal

Star Rating 3

Turning tales of beer pong and random sexual engagements into poetry seems like an easy task, but that’s only because Asher Roth makes it seem easy. The proclaimed hip-hop phenom is turning heads with his professional debut Asleep In The Bread Aisle. Raised just outside Philadelphia, the rapper displays some outstanding talent on a record full of primal urges (“Lion’s Roar”) and bold yet true statements (“Be By Myself”) but he doesn’t show a sense of individuality. Roth’s rhymes may fit any tempo and have you saying profanities out loud in delight, but the rapper needs to step into his own spotlight. The potential’s there, he just needs to grasp it like an innocent-looking ping pong ball.
