Going Live: SXSW 2013 (Day Two)

People can be pretty skeptical about opening up to new artists. They assume every musician is trying their best to imitate icons or indie darlings, and in return, they drift back to playing it safe with records they can go on about to some stranger at a house party. At SXSW, “playing it safe” isn’t an option. Thursday’s events roared on, allowing the likes of Merchandise, Austra, Mac DeMarco, Charli XCX and The Orwells to do their thing and cripple with the idea of being a new discovery. Half of our staff visited VICELAND for Major Lazer and Snoop Lion but with a long day full of meetings and detours, we took in TORO Y MOI’s incredible indoor set and watched a trio of unpredictable MCs – ANGEL HAZE, TRINIDAD JAME$ and YELAWOLF – show what it means to truly turn the rap game inside out.
