One thing city festivals do best is they let emerging artists clash with the veterans. Being a week-long blast of the past, present and the future, NORTH BY NORTHEAST is a prime example as Friday allowed city folk and visiting music admirers to take in swigs of SLOAN and The National before dipping into the type of young raw talent you’d expect at a sweaty basement show. Because it’s NXNE, it didn’t stop there. DEADLY HOPEFULS, THE BEACHES and MOON KING were just some of the up-and-comers bashing their way through impressive sets, and whether they had to take the beloved streetcar or even bike it, people found a way across town to jump in the pit for FLAG’s headliner at The Opera House. The reincarnation of Black Flag played everything from Damaged, Jealous Again and Nervous Breakdown, and because of the venue’s acoustics, it was a highlight that pretty much blinded everyone.
