Having been at Mohawk and Red 7 the night before, it was inevitable that Thursday’s SXSW events would start on a solemn note. A handful of writers and outlets took a vow of silence, disconnecting from the Internet world to spend time with friends and those that mattered most. We weren’t exactly sure how the festival would play out – especially with the cancellation of Stereogum’s House Of Vans showcase – but we dove into an afternoon of interviews, took in a few sets at BrooklynVegan and Life Or Death’s party, and joined artists and the like to see FUCKED UP and DESTRUCTION UNIT spearhead a few hours of headbanging at Thrasher. Nightfall pretty much coincided with lines on lines on lines (i.e. The Main, Empire Garage, The Hype Hotel) so our staff split up to catch a handful of must-sees including: SCHOOLBOY Q, AB-SOUL, GREYS, GRMLN, CHRISTOPHER OWENS, and MERCHANDISE.
Check out our photos below via Sean Wilkin + Julia Marcello and make sure to read Lindsay Zoladz’s “Pressing Pause” piece on SXSW’s tragedy.
