Whereas the Saturday edition of Arts & Crafts Field Trip solidified the label’s bond to indie, Sunday’s festivities deconstructed their irrefutable history. Even at a rained-out Historic Fort York, the group established their merit with what’s perhaps one of the greatest day lineups – tying influential Canadian staples (Constantines, HYDRA, Gord Downie & The Sadies) to bands that really don’t need an introduction (Fucked Up, Broken Social Scene). BSS had the most surprising set as everyone’s affair with the band skyrocketed during Jason Collett and Amy Millan-assisted tracks (like “7/4 Shoreline”) but the young guns had everyone beat. BadBadNotGood, CHVRCHES, and Washed Out literally put the “performing” back into “performing artist” as each group cruised with some of the best sets we’ve seen in a while. Maybe it’s because some of us are still not allowed to drink legally south of the border or rent a Chevy Impala, but they pushed the proverbial envelope on one of Toronto’s biggest stages. And that speaks volumes for the future of A&C’s festival.
Take a peek at Jeff Filman’s photo sets below and check out his work from Saturday – featuring The Kills, Austra, Half Moon Run, and Kevin Drew.
