NOTES: A lyricist with a thirst for philosophy and consciousness, the 17-year-old Joey Bada$$ is staking out a path to grow, while at the same time, finds himself doing it at the center of what some are calling a “resurrection of clear-minded hip hop”. The high school junior’s debut mixtape 1999 is a true example of that but it’s also comprehensive, tasteful and a reminder of how sweet a Brooklyn MC’s rhymes can be when listening closely. South By Southwest is calling (Joey and co. missed it in March due to mom’s orders) and so is a collaborative release with his Progressive Era crew, but his artistic side isn’t finished building its craft; the summer’s his so the least we can do is listen.
