On Saturday HEAVY T.O. returned to Toronto to put a few restless metal heads to rest and succeeded while also meshing the different realms of alternative to produce one giant, axe-wielding beast. Though the rain turned Downsview Park into a beaten and muddy motocross track, every band on the bill was poised to rock. Replacements IN FLAMES and DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN fired off complex but amplified sets as Anders Friden stole our camera to take crowd photos and frontman Greg Puciato screamed from every corner of the stage. PROTEST THE HERO and SUICIDAL TENDENCIES flipped on prog and punk and though SLIPKNOT’s first show in the city in nearly four years was “terrifyingly gorgeous”, Toronto’s own CANCER BATS flew into a primal set that knifed with old blood.
