Photos: Memory Tapes at The Drake Hotel

When it’s all said and done, Dayve Hawk’s project MEMORY TAPES will be cherished not only for pioneering an isolated corner of chillwave, but for also engineering subversive moments in time. His recordings, LPs, and tours are all responsible for doing so and it was pretty apparent during his recent stop at The Drake Hotel on Wednesday (July 22nd). In front of a smaller Toronto crowd, Hawk’s affinity for cathartic junctures was on full display; every gloomy beat, synth, interlude, and burst of fuzz connected on a jarring level that was 1-on-1 and not 1-on-100. Luckily, Brooklyn’s Danielle Johnson – aka COMPUTER MAGIC – matched Memory Tapes’ undying intimacy with a glitchy pop opener that sat somewhere between Toro y Moi and Massive Attack (Dreams Of Better Days is a must). Photographer Hannah Jor was on hand for both and her live stills can be found in the gallery above.
