PROFILE: Gary Clark Jr. (CMJ 2011)

Discovering a new band can be potent. It’s like bumping into a new obsession, one you’ll find comfort in, share the most complex emotions with and hopelessly fall in love with, realizing the simple connection made is so much more.

Born and raised in Austin, Texas – a fascinating city he’s considered to be a leader of – GARY CLARK JR. is a guitarist driven by the power that swells inside of blues. Going from performing at small gigs as a teenager to being a featured act at the 2010 Crossroads Guitar Festival, the 27-year-old has exhibited a vintage strain of rock, the type that draws from a sound that dominated the 60s’ and 70s’ and is slowly creeping back into the fold. It’s sexy, it’s loud, and most of all, it’s infectious.

“A RARITY IN THE BLUES COMMUNITY”
“SLIPS BETWEEN “DISTORTION SATURATED STOMP” AND “DELICATE NEO-SOUL” WITH AN EASE WE HAVEN’T SEEN SINCE WELL, EVER”
“WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME A YOUNG BLUES
GUITARIST REALLY BLEW YOUR MIND?”
