All good things must come to an end but that doesn’t mean they can’t go out with a loud bang (or a whole lot of crowd-surfing). The first two days of Governors Ball flexed the festival’s exceptional range and allegiance to New York, and Sunday did a lot of damage via two major fronts. On one hand, James Blake and BANKS delved into the different tiers of instrumental-splattered R&B while J. Cole, Earl Sweatshirt, and Tyler The Creator stirred it up. On the other, The Kills, Interpol, Foster The People, and the always-driven Frank Turner scraped off various flecks of alternative. Both sides intertwined fairly well and it allowed Vampire Weekend to follow through with one of the most important sets of their career – one that coolly paraded through three albums and saw the NYC foursome close out their hometown show with a bang-up job of “Walcott”. The band nor the song are not what other festivals would prefer to see conclude their sold-out weekends, but to be fair, this is Governors Ball and they’re well aware that “basic” is pretty boring.
