Despite his subtle discomfort with the spotlight, JAMIE XX has been killing it this year. His small one-offs at the likes of Bonnaroo and Gorilla vs. Bear Festival have been incredible, if not buzzworthy, and they all come down to his ability to build rotations. In fact, off curating alone, James Smith is a “master selector” and that trait was the clear highlight of his recent trip to Toronto’s Danforth Music Hall (August 6th). The gig itself was sold-out and Jamie delivered – shuffling through various bits of house, electro, and Gil-Scott Heron before pleasing the crowd with In Colour recordings (“Gosh”, “Loud Places”). His two-hour setlist didn’t feature the official Dre Skull-assisted remix of “Good Times” but it still managed to play to his strengths – presenting a grab bag of snippets and old gems that were more original than cliché.
