BLARE’s 5 Best New Artists (October 2012)

XAPHOON JONES

NOTES: The 25-year-old’s ear-warping sound isn’t new but the one half of Chiddy Bang is pumping out blood from original recordings and getting them hooked on a serious palette of modernistic freelance beats. Extracting vibes from textbook hip hop and indie’s underground, Xaphoon Jones manipulative tendencies have stenciled boisterous remixes of pop rock ( Grouplove, Atlas Genius), emphasized new rap hits (Meek Mill, Big Sean) and have even silhouetted an Ellie Goulding cover of The Weeknd that’s gracefully edgy. The Philadelphia artist isn’t just another production name though because as his new mixtape release shows, there’s sheer brilliance behind every beat.
