CITIZEN
NOTES: Like peers Balance And Composure and Tigers Jaw, the Michigan quintet do “miserable” best, even if that means turning alternative punk into a legible escape route. Rather than letting chords zip with sugar-coated innocence, Citizen slam slow-burning melodies into sentimental songwriting that isn’t afraid to tangle with thoughts of feeling hopeless (“Untitled”) or discontent (“Detached”). The build-ups aren’t actively electric, but the five-piece’s sound swells with a natural form of honesty that can only be extracted from a hate you can’t keep put away.
